New Delhi: A Spanish trawler that was hijacked six week ago by Somali pirates in the Indian ocean were freed on Tuesday when a $3.3m ransom was delivered to them .

After being freed, the trawler steamed away under the protection of two Spanish warships. All the 36 crew members were reported to be in good health.

Previously the pirates had said that the ship would not be freed unless two of their colleagues captured by the Spanish navy who were charged with armed robbery and kidnapping.

Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, while addressing a press conference in Madrid said “The important thing is that the sailors will be back with us. The first obligation of a country, of the government of a state, is to save the lives of its countrymen.” But at the same time he did not confirm anything about paying the hijackers.
