Great American Smokeout!

FAIRBANKS: It’s time to Great American Smokeout!

Every year on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society challenges tobacco users to quit the habit for 24 hours by joining the Great American Smokeout.

The event is to help tobacco users take the first step by committing to a long-term plan to quit for good.

Smoking contributes to almost 438,000 deaths each year. Of those deaths, 38,000 are non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke, the press release stated.

The American Cancer Society offers a wide variety of resources, including a free Quitline, 1-800-227-2345, for people trying to quit.

The Quitline gives tobacco users a chance to speak with trained counselors for free.
